Plain Clip Privacy Policy
Plain Clip (the "App") is a Windows application that pastes copied text without formatting and lets you reuse recently copied text. This policy describes how the App handles information.
Information handled and purpose
- Text on the clipboard: when the clipboard changes, the App reads only the text and uses it as a history of recently copied text (10 items by default, up to 50 in the settings). It does not read the contents of images or files. Content that a password manager or similar app marks as "do not keep in history" is not added to the history.
- History: kept only in memory while the App is running and cleared when the App exits. It is never saved to disk, to the settings file or to logs.
- Pasting: only when you perform a paste operation, the App puts the text without formatting on the clipboard and sends a paste command (Ctrl+V) to the app you are pasting into.
- Keyboard and mouse input: the App checks which key was pressed and when, only to detect a double press of a modifier key and to enter shortcuts in the settings window. It never records or stores the characters you type. For the mouse, it only checks whether a button or the wheel was used. To make sure key monitoring has not stopped, it also checks how many inputs it received and when, and the time of the last input recorded by Windows (the content of the input is not used).
- Settings (how to call each function, shortcuts, number of history items, display language, etc.): saved in your user folder on this PC (
%LocalAppData%\PlainClip\settings.json) and used for the App's operation. - Start when Windows starts: only if you turn it on, the App registers itself in the startup entries of the current Windows user (the registry; in the Microsoft Store version, Windows startup apps).
- Error log: when a problem occurs, the date, time and error details are written to
%LocalAppData%\PlainClip\error.log. Error details may include file locations, but never the contents of the clipboard. - Diagnostic log (version 2.1.0 and later): only when you start recording in the settings window, for 7 days, the App writes the date and time, counts, results and error numbers of key monitoring and app events, and the App and Windows versions, to
diagnostic.log(in the same app folder as the settings). It never includes clipboard contents, typed characters or window titles. It is used only if you choose to send it yourself to investigate a problem.
Sending information outside
The App does not communicate over the Internet. It never sends clipboard content, history, settings or logs to the developer or any third party, and it has no analytics or advertising features.
Only when you click "Source code", "Website" or "Privacy policy" in the settings window, the App opens the corresponding page in your default browser. The App sends no information when doing so (the page is viewed in your browser).
Text that the App puts on the clipboard is handled by the apps or services you paste it into. If you have turned on Windows clipboard history or sync, it is handled according to your Windows settings (when the App rewrites content marked "do not keep in history", it keeps the same mark).
Retention and deletion
The history is cleared when the App exits. You can also clear it with "Clear history" in the tray menu. Settings, the error log and the diagnostic log can be removed by deleting the %LocalAppData%\PlainClip\ folder (in the Microsoft Store version, they are stored in a folder that Windows manages for each app and are deleted when you uninstall the App). Automatic startup is removed when you turn it off in the App's settings.
