AreaShot Privacy Policy
AreaShot (the "app") is a Windows app that, at the user's request, captures a selected area of the screen and copies it to the clipboard, saves it to a file, or opens it in a simple editor. This policy describes how the app handles information.
Information and purposes
- Screen captures: taken only when the user starts a capture with a shortcut or menu and selects an area, and used to copy, save or edit the image. A capture contains whatever was displayed in the selected area.
- Saved image files: saved only when the user chooses to save, in the configured folder (by default, "AreaShot" in the Pictures folder).
- Settings (shortcut, save folder, file name format, display language, etc.): stored on this PC in the user folder (
%LocalAppData%\AreaShot\settings.json) and used to run the app. - Start with Windows: only if the user turns it on, the app registers itself in the current user's Windows startup entries (the registry, or Startup apps in the Microsoft Store version).
- Error log: when a problem occurs (and for a few events such as settings corrections), the date, time and error details are written to
%LocalAppData%\AreaShot\error.log. Details may include file locations, but never capture images.
Sharing
The app does not communicate over the internet. It never sends captures, settings or logs to the developer or any third party, and it has no analytics or advertising.
Only when the user clicks "User Guide (web)" in the Settings window, the app opens the user guide on this site in the default browser. The app sends no information when doing so (the page is viewed in the browser).
Images copied to the clipboard are handled by the apps or services where the user pastes them, and by Windows according to its clipboard history and sync settings if those are turned on.
Retention and deletion
The user manages saved image files; uninstalling the app does not delete them. Settings and the error log can be removed by deleting the %LocalAppData%\AreaShot\ folder (in the Microsoft Store version, Windows keeps them in a folder it manages for each app and removes them when the app is uninstalled). Start with Windows is removed by turning it off in the app's settings.
